The most common question we get from Texas families sounds like this. Do I pay more because I live in Houston, or less because I live in a smaller town?
The answer is no on both counts. On term life insurance, your city and your ZIP code do not change the price at all. Neither does the state you live in, in almost every case, with a few exceptions like New York and Montana.
What actually sets your rate
Five things. Your age, your health class, whether you use tobacco, how much coverage you want, and how long you want it to last.
That is the entire list. A healthy 35 year old in Houston and a healthy 35 year old in Amarillo pay the same premium for the same policy. So do residents of Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Fort Worth, El Paso, and every other city in the state.
Real numbers for Texas
These are verified monthly premiums for a $500,000, 20 year level term policy at Preferred Plus pricing for a non smoker. Best ranked carrier at each age, pulled from the rate engine we use to quote real clients.
- Age 25: Male $17.95/mo | Female $14.79/mo
- Age 35: Male $20.13/mo | Female $17.07/mo
- Age 45: Male $45.51/mo | Female $35.88/mo
- Age 55: Male $113.76/mo | Female $82.70/mo
The same figures apply whether you are reading this in Houston or Dallas. We publish the same table on every city page for that reason, rather than inventing a local price to look more relevant.
So what does your location change?
Two things, and neither one is the sticker price.
*Which carriers will write you.* Insurance companies are licensed state by state, and each one has its own appetite. Some are aggressive in Texas and conservative elsewhere. That affects who can offer you coverage, not what the base rate is.
*How you are underwritten.* Two people with identical health profiles can land in different rate classes at different carriers. One company is lenient about a past back surgery and another penalizes it heavily. That gap is often larger than any difference people imagine exists between cities.
Why local quotes look different
If you have gotten two wildly different quotes for yourself, it was almost certainly not geography. It was one of these.
One quote was for permanent coverage with cash value built in, which costs several times more per month than level term for the same death benefit.
One quote came from a single company with a single set of underwriting rules. One carrier's price is not the market price. When we shop a case across many carriers, the difference between the best and worst offer for the same person is routinely more than double.
Or one quote assumed a different health class. Someone with well controlled blood pressure can be quoted as Preferred with one company and Standard with another, and that alone moves the number.
What you can control
You cannot make yourself younger, which is why the cheapest version of you that will ever exist is the one reading this today. Compare the table above at 25 and 45 and you can see what waiting costs.
Tobacco is the single biggest swing factor after age. Quitting changes your rate class, and some carriers are more forgiving about how long you have been tobacco free than others.
Coverage amount and term length are yours to choose. Less coverage, a shorter term, or both means a lower premium. The goal is to match the coverage to the years your family actually depends on your income, not to buy the biggest number on the page.
The bottom line
Your rate follows you, not your address. If you want to know what your own number looks like, it takes a few minutes to find out. See rates by age for the full table, or read how much life insurance costs per month for the plain explanation.
Then get your own quote and compare the real offers side by side. No obligation, and most applicants qualify without a medical exam.
