The short answer

Being single does not automatically remove the need for life insurance. If you carry a mortgage, cosigned debt, a business obligation, or you support a parent or sibling, someone would be financially affected by your death. If none of that applies and no one depends on your income, coverage is optional, and a small policy to cover final expenses is often the only piece worth considering.

When single people can skip it

If your death would leave no one with a financial obligation, there is no income replacement need to cover. No dependents, no mortgage, no cosigned loans, and an estate that can absorb a funeral without strain means the case for coverage is weak.

Even then, the argument for a small policy is usually about not leaving a bill behind. A modest final expense policy makes sure a parent or sibling is not funding a funeral out of pocket, which is a different question from income replacement.

When it still makes sense

A mortgage in your name alone is the clearest case, particularly in Texas where homestead protections can pass the home to a surviving spouse or minor children but do nothing to erase the loan payment. Cosigned debt is the second: a private student loan or a car loan with a cosigner becomes that person's obligation if you die.

Business obligations matter as well. A partner whose interest would need to be bought out, or a business loan you personally guaranteed, creates a real exposure. Supporting aging parents or a sibling with special needs is the fourth common situation, and it often outlasts any fixed term.

How much to consider

Size it to the actual exposure rather than to a rule of thumb built for families. A single person needing to clear a $250,000 mortgage and a cosigned loan may only need enough to cover those balances plus final expenses, which is a far smaller face amount than the income multiple a parent of two would use. Term coverage for the length of the obligation is usually the efficient way to handle it.

Related questions

Is life insurance worth it if you have no dependents?

It can be, when debt or a business obligation would land on someone else, or when you simply do not want to leave funeral costs to a family member. With no dependents and no shared debt, coverage is optional.

Do single parents need life insurance?

Yes, and often urgently. A single parent is the only income and the only caregiver, so coverage needs to replace both the earnings and the cost of childcare and household support the family would have to buy in.
