The short answer
Universal life insurance is permanent coverage with more flexibility than whole life: you can vary the premium within limits, adjust the death benefit, and the policy separates the cost of insurance from the cash value account. Guaranteed universal life is the version most Texas buyers use, structured with a level premium to a chosen age such as 90 or 95, which keeps lifelong coverage affordable without relying on cash value performance.
How universal life works
Each premium payment goes partly to the cost of insurance and partly into a cash value account that earns interest at a rate the carrier declares, subject to a floor. Because those pieces are tracked separately, you have latitude: pay more in a good year, pay less in a tight one, or adjust the face amount as circumstances change.
That flexibility is the product's defining feature and also its main risk. A policy with the minimum premium and an optimistic interest assumption can run short of cash value later, and if the account cannot cover the cost of insurance the policy can lapse even though premiums were paid.
Universal life compared to whole life
Whole life has a fixed premium, a guaranteed death benefit, and guaranteed cash value growth that the contract specifies. Universal life trades some of that certainty for flexibility and, in the guaranteed universal life form, guarantees the death benefit as long as you pay the scheduled premium to the age you selected.
Guaranteed universal life is usually the cheapest permanent structure per dollar of death benefit, because it strips out the cash value accumulation that makes whole life expensive. If lifelong coverage is the goal and cash value is not, it is often the efficient choice for a Texas buyer.
What to watch for
Read the guarantee carefully. The no-lapse guarantee holds only if premiums are paid on schedule; missing payments or taking loans can void it and leave you with a policy whose cash value may be exhausted years sooner than expected. Also compare illustrations on conservative interest assumptions rather than the carrier's midpoint, and check the current cost of insurance charges since those can increase in some designs.
Related questions
Can universal life insurance lapse?
Yes, if the cash value account cannot cover the cost of insurance. That can happen when minimum premiums are paid and interest credits fall short. Policies with a no-lapse guarantee avoid it as long as the scheduled premium is paid.
Is universal life cheaper than whole life?
Usually yes for the same face amount, especially guaranteed universal life structured to a specific age. The trade is that whole life carries contractual cash value guarantees while universal life does not.
