The short answer

You can cash out a permanent policy by surrendering it for its cash surrender value, but term life has nothing to cash out. Surrendering ends the coverage permanently and can create a taxable gain to the extent the value exceeds what you paid in. For many Texas policyholders a policy loan, a reduced paid-up policy, or a partial withdrawal serves the same purpose without giving up the coverage.

Which policies have cash value

Whole life, universal life, and other permanent designs accumulate cash value. Level term does not: it is pure protection with no account to surrender, which is why a term policy that is no longer needed simply lapses with no payout. If you are unsure which type you hold, the presence of a cash value table in the contract is the giveaway.

The surrender value is not the same as the accumulated value in the early years. Most permanent policies charge a surrender charge for a set period, commonly the first 10 to 15 years, so the amount you receive is lower than the cash value shown during that window. Reading that schedule before deciding is important.

What cashing out costs you

Surrendering is irreversible. The coverage ends, and replacing it later means qualifying again at an older age and whatever health you have then, at a higher premium. If the policy was bought when you were younger and healthier, that original health class is the asset you are giving up.

There can also be a tax consequence. To the extent the surrender value exceeds your basis, which is roughly the premiums paid, the difference is generally taxable as ordinary income. A policy with substantial gain should be reviewed with a tax advisor before it is surrendered.

Alternatives worth considering

A policy loan lets you access cash value without ending the coverage, with the outstanding balance deducted from the death benefit if it is never repaid. A reduced paid-up election keeps a smaller policy in force with no further premiums, which preserves some protection. A partial withdrawal takes some cash out while leaving the policy active. Each has its own effect on the death benefit and the policy's long-term viability, so the right choice depends on why you need the money.

Can you cash out term life insurance?

No. Level term has no cash value and nothing to surrender. If the need has ended, the policy simply lapses when you stop paying. Return-of-premium term products exist but charge a much higher premium for that feature.

How much is my life insurance policy worth in cash?

It depends on the cash value, your basis in the policy, and any surrender charge still applying. The contract's cash value table and surrender schedule give the exact figure, and the carrier can confirm the current amount.
